The last tour of the fourth world

Master's Degree Final Project

Calexico is an indie folk band from Tucson, Arizona, a town 97 miles from the border with Mexico. The group translates this closeness into admiration and interest for this side of the continent, creating music that emerges from the fusion of both cultures. This project consists on a proposal for the art direction of the new tour of the band as well as the graphic identity of the same. The art direction of this tour is based on a storytelling that will connect Calexico to the Hopis, the oldest indigenous people in the northern hemisphere, to shape their message and to make known to people the reality of different communities and cultures that suffer the consequences of these imaginary dividing lines called boundaries.

"Calexico makes music that is almost inevitably about borders both musical and national: finding them, crossing them, blurring them"

Tour Teaser

The tour begins with a Land Art Happening that will begin to tell us the story of the Hopis. They believe in a prophecy about a predatory, consumeristic and selfish way of life in which mankind lives and predicts its inevitable destruction. This will be shown to us through nine signs of which all of them have been fulfilled but one.

"You will hear of a dwelling-place in the heavens, above the earth, that shall fall with a great crash. It will appear as a blue star. Very soon after this, the ceremonies of the Hopi people will cease."

Hence the naming for the world tour The Last Tour of the Fourth World, a concept and a mysterious and shocking story, which will merge the the Hopi prophecy with life on the borders; The same kind of fusion that Calexico makes with their music. With a sublime aesthetic, the visual universe of the tour reflects the imposing and noble desert nature and the smallness of Men in comparison with this overwhelming scenery.
